ABOUT

NORTH TEXAS AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE SCHOOL

North Texas ASL School began in August of 2018 with around 20 students in ASL I.  Through the last few years, we have been able to share the language to many families. We have increased our offerings through ASL IV.  And we have inspired several students to continue their ASL studies in College.

The instructor's background includes an Associates Degree in the Interpreting Program from Dallas Community College. She was registered in the state of TX as an American Sign Language Interpreter. Mrs. Rooks was employed by Dallas Independent School District as an ASL interpreter. As part of that job she also taught ASL to elementary students. After her resignation as an interpreter, she worked as a substitute interpreter and also a substitute deaf education teacher.

School Info: NT ASL School got started with an intention to teach ASL for foreign language educational credit (transcript worthy). Most of our students are homeschooled. (Mrs. Rooks is a homeschool veteran of 24 years and counting.) Our ASL students range in age from 6th - 12th grade (and even a couple of super seniors).

We use the curriculum MASTER ASL for ASL I and II. http://www.masterasl.com/  The curriculum is non-consumable ~ so one set is all a family (if siblings are taking the class together) needs to purchase.

We offer in person and online classes.

Our 2023-2024 schedule:

ASL I Online (Class videos are posted up on Tuesdays)

ASL I In Person  Tuesdays  1:00-2:00pm

ASL II Online (Class videos are posted up on Tuesdays)

ASL II In Person Tuesdays 3:00-4:00 pm

ASL II  Online (Class videos are posted up on Tuesdays)

ASL III  In Person Tuesdays 2:00-3:00 pm

ASL IV  In Person Thursdays 1:30-2:30pm

Classes begin Sept 6th and Sept 8th and meet weekly. (Minus major holidays) In Person classes are held in Anna, TX.  Homework is assigned via Google Classroom for students to work on independently during the week. Mrs. Rooks does hold students accountable to homework and special projects deadlines. Parents will receive semester and final grades to add to your grades/transcripts.

Mrs. Rooks is a hearing person.  She feels like an ASL student needs to meet and chat with the Deaf community. She encourages this and makes those opportunities available.
